Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Nathaniel Newton infant School, our curriculum is designed to develop the whole child in order for them to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be successful as they move through the education milestones to become citizens of the future, living in modern Britain. Our curriculum offer ensures that children receive a broad and balanced curriculum where they are motivated and enthused to try new things and foster interests in order to develop a lifelong love of learning.
We have placed early language acquisition and reading at the heart of our curriculum. We recognise that it is crucial to develop these skills in order for children to be successful learners across all areas of the curriculum.
The wider curriculum is taught through topics and we believe this thematic approach enables children to make meaningful links between subjects to strengthen their ability to acquire and remember knowledge and develop transferrable skills. Our approach to providing children with first-hand experiences through active learning enables children to develop skills of independence, resilience and the ability to work collaboratively. Topics are planned to foster children’s interests and build on strengths whilst ensuring curriculum coverage and progression.
As an attachment aware and trauma informed school, we are proud to be fully inclusive and pride ourselves on ensuring that our curriculum promotes inclusivity. We strive to raise aspirations of all children and through quality first teaching and targeted interventions, learning is planned to ensure a variety of learning styles are catered for in order for children to achieve well from their individual starting points.
Throughout our curriculum we have woven in many opportunities to develop a growing understanding of British values as well as recognising, welcoming and celebrating differences and respecting each other. We place importance on supporting children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as well as promoting good mental health, well-being and healthy lifestyles.
We strive for our children to gain a greater understanding and to value their own identity and heritage. As citizens of Nuneaton, Warwickshire and the UK we strive to develop understanding of their cultural roots and their role as members of the global society.
Our extended school provision provides enrichment opportunities where healthy lifestyles and well-being are actively promoted alongside children developing interests and exploring new activities. We offer a wide menu of activities such as basketball, multi-sports, athletics, football, sewing, arts and crafts, cookery, computing and book club to name a few.
We want children to be happy and aim to provide an environment that allows children to develop a sense of well-being and the ability to regulate their feelings so that they feel confident in our school.
